| Gigo, born in 1979 in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, is an artist and curator. In 1991, the year of the collapse of the communist system of his native country, he moved to Essen, Germany, located in the heart of the Ruhrarea. There he encountered new and different social and politicial ideas and an unknown multicultural society.Like Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Ruhrarea underwent a structural change at that time. Both of these transformations shape Gigo’s work today, especially the loss of identity and the reorientation that is going along with it. He in particular tackles issues to the rapid changing meaning of places and to the alienation of citizens with their environment.
An important component of Gigo’s work is Public Art. Furthermore he engages in the promotion of art in general and cultural affairs. Gigo lives and works in the Ruhrarea. Beide Veränderungen prägen heute Gigos Arbeit, besonders dem damit einhergehenden Identitätsverlust und die resultierende Neuorientierung. Gigo thematisiert sowohl die sich rapide verändernde Bedeutung von Orten als auch die Entfremdung des Menschens von seiner Umwelt. Wichtiger Bestandteil des Schaffens von Gigo ist Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. Ferner betreibt er mit verschiedenen Projekten nicht nur lokal Kunst- und Kulturförderung. Gigo lebt und arbeitet im Ruhrgebiet.
